Is the True Friend Your Friend?

March 21, 2017 / Anna Dowdy

Do you have a true friend?  Every one of us is created for a relationship, and we all feel the need to be close to someone.  We want someone that will listen to and solve all our problems, meet all our needs, be a comfort and help in hard times, and always be there for us.

Let me tell you about my true Friend.  I grew up hearing about Him, and I trusted Him to be my Savior when I was six years old.  Since then, my relationship with Him has grown significantly, and He has proven himself over and over again to be all that I need!  This Friend is none other than Jesus Christ Himself.  Proverbs 18:24 describes Him as “a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”

In order to have friends, you must be friendly toward others and work on building a relationship. So how do you develop your relationship with Jesus?  It’s just like building any other relationship – you’ve got to spend time with Him every day. God speaks to us through His Word, the Bible, and we talk to God in prayer. God promises in His Word that if we will draw nigh to Him, then He will draw nigh to us (James 4:8). The more time you spend with Jesus, the more you will grow and be changed.  Talk to Him all day long! When you experience a difficulty or an unexpected trial, take it to God and tell Him about it. When you have a need, go to God and ask Him to meet your need. When you feel as though you are all alone, run to Jesus in prayer. Just get in the habit of taking everything – your problems, cares, passions, desires, thoughts, sorrows, sickness, sins, defeats, temptations, trials, joys, victories – to God in prayer.  If you have not made Jesus your best Friend already, then I encourage you to take a step toward Him today and experience divine Friendship!

What a friend we have in Jesus,
All our sins and griefs to bear!
What a privilege to carry
Everything to God in prayer!

O what peace we often forfeit,
O what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry
Everything to God in prayer!
